Gary Anderson edged out in Dublin6/10/2014 Direct from Unicorn Darts
Gary Anderson just missed out on his 7th title of the year in Dublin on Sunday.
But on a dramatic day at the City West Hotel, Unicorn star Joe Cullen has all but secured his spot at the World Championship for a 5th consecutive year and Team Unicorn Aussie Kyle Anderson has taken a big step towards claiming a place at the Alexandra Palace in December.
Cullen reached the Players Championship semi-final on Sunday.....Kyle Anderson made the quarter-finals, while Gary Anderson was beaten 6-2 by Brendan Dolan in the final.
In a dress rehearsal of their clash in the 1st Round of the World Grand Prix on Monday night, the Irishman finished superbly....to be fair, it was probably Anderson's worst display of the day. He never got going in the final, but it will add something extra to that showdown in the WGP, that's for sure!
Anderson had beaten Andy Parsons (6-3), Andy Jenkins (6-2), fellow Unicorn man Jamie Caven (6-3), Justin Pipe (6-4) and Stephen Bunting 6-2 in the semi-finals.
The £2,500 Cullen earned by reaching his second Players Championship semi-final of the year means that he has surely done enough to qualify for the Ally Pally through the Pro Tour Order of Merit.
It was a fabulous performance as Cullen celebrated signing a new three-year contract with Unicorn....He beat the likes of Dave Chisnall (6-3), Unicorn stablemate Andy Hamilton (6-2) and then came a brilliant 6-4 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the last 16! The Bradford man then saw off Mark Webster 6-2 before losing 6-3 to Dolan in the semi-finals despite a 99 average and a 160 finish!
Kyle Anderson's terrific run to another Pro Tour quarter-final saw him pocket £1,500 and he is very close now to guaranteeing that place at the World Championship, which will be a great achievement since he took the plunge to play the PDC circuit.
The Aussie ace beat fellow Unicorn man James Wade on his way to the last eight where he went down 6-1 to Bunting.
Kim Huybrechts also reached the quarter-finals on Sunday but he lost 6-2 to Dolan.
Elsewhere on Sunday, the Unicorn duo of Kevin Painter and Aden Kirk reached the last 16. from Unicorn Darts
But it was a poor weekend for Raymond van Barneveld ahead of the Grand Prix as he lost in the 1st Round on both days to Mark Dudbridge and Mark Webster.
Wes Newton also fell at the first hurdle both days.....Saturday's tournament was won by Justin Pipe who won a last leg decider in the final against Michael van Gerwen.
Saturday in Dublin wasn't a great day for Team Unicorn....Hamilton's run to the last 16 the best performance from a Unicorn player.
But now all eyes turn to the Grand Prix and there will be daily coverage right here on the Unicorn website.
